PEOPLE'S CARNAVAL TAKES PLACE IN SAO VICENTE
The people of São Vicente participated in the final day of Carnaval Tuesday with revelry, creativity and joy, allowing all present to forget the fact that only two groups participated in the official parade competition this year.
Thousands of Mindelo residents took to the city’s streets to see and, above all, participate in the 2008 Carnaval. With the absence of significant numbers of official groups - only the groups Cruzeiros do Norte and Flores do Mindelo competed for the prizes - the people of the island of São Vicente decided to take it upon itself to ensure inspiration and creativity on the city streets.
This is the type of Carnaval I like, when people are uninhibited and spill out onto the streets, showing that with little money but a lot of creativity you can have a great Carnaval, like this one,” said one of the thousands of spectators who filled the city’s main streets.
The celebrations included the traditional “Mandinga” groups from the neighborhoods of Ribeira Bote, Fonte Inês and Espia, in addition to informal groups such as Jovens de Monte Sossego, Tucim Bedje, Abadá Capoeira, OS Aventureiros and Sonhos Sem Limites.
Now, with the revelry over - and with no significant incidents reported, according to the National Police - the people of Mindelo will wait for the announcement of the winner of the official competition and, of course, for next year’s Carnaval.
