CARNAVAL CELEBRATIONS IN SAO VICENTE 1ST - 5TH JAN 2008
Carnaval rhythms began to be heard this morning in the city of Mindelo, with the parades being held by the city’s kindergartens and elementary schools.
Officially, the São Vicente municipal chamber’s 2008 Carnaval program included only one kindergarten parade, but early this morning many different kindergartens and schools decided to take to the streets to show the city their creativity and rhythm.
The costumes and accessories were manufactured at the schools by the teachers and students themselves. “It’s a way of showing the work we’ve done in the classroom, but also of awarding the students who have made a special effort and who like to celebrate Carnaval,” said one teacher.
The themes were mainly educational: environmental protection, blood donation, etc. But there were also lots of witches, spidermen, fairies, etc.
Celebrations continue in the city until Tuesday night.
