CARNAVAL PREPERATIONS IN PRAIA
Everything appears to be in place for a grand Carnaval in Praia. This year, the official parade, which takes place tomorrow afternoon, will have seven groups in the main bloc, five of which will vie for the three prizes awarded by the Praia municipal chamber: 300,000 for the first-place winner, 200,000 for second and 100,000 for third. Five other non-competing groups will also parade on Cidade de Lisboa Avenue today.
Of the groups that participated in the official parade last year, only Afro Abel-Djassi and Estrelas de São Filipe will be present this year. Both have some 500 members each and have elaborated a parade based on the theme of the 150th anniversary of the city of Praia.
Bairro Craveiro Lopes, which last year was represented by the local Bairro Craveiro Lopes residents’ association, will parade this year under the name of the re-born Vindos d’África.
The range of groups slated to participate in the main parade also includes Escola Pedro Gomes, Sem Vergonha, the Achada Grande Secondary School and Rei Momo. Non-competing groups, in addition to elementary school and kindergarten groups (who will parade today), include Moradores de São Filipe, Rola Samba, Jovens da Várzea, Promo House and Kabo Fashion.
