SAO VICENTE CARNAVAL BEGINS
Carnaval festivities on the island of São Vicente, which this year begin on Friday, February 1 and end on Ash Wednesday, will feature only two officially competing groups, but are nevertheless expected to be filled with excitement. The guarantee comes from the director of the municipal culture department, José António Lopes, who spoke to the press yesterday afternoon alongside mayor Isaura Gomes.
Lopes highlighted Friday’s parade by the pupils in the Amílcar Cabral Kindergarten, which will officialy kick off Mardi Gras celebrations in Mindelo. On Saturday, things will begin to heat up with parades by Infância Feliz Kindergarten, the Higher Institute of Education, Tropical Som and the Isidoro da Graça Institute of Higher Learning. On Sunday, parades will be held by Tucim Bedje, Renascimento de Fonte Inês, Mindelgina, Menin Nôs Terra, Mandingas da Ribeira Bote, Alegria de Bela Vista and Mandingas e Zorros de Fonte Filipe.
Parades will begin early - 10:00 am - on Monday, and will continue into the night with the groups Praça Nova, Anísio do Rosário e Académica, Ludgero Lima High School, the Pedagogical Institute, José Augusto Pinto High School, Cruzeiro, EICM, Jorge Barbosa High School, Mindel Fantasy and Caprichosos do Mindelo. On Tuesday, Mindelo will see parades by the two officially competing groups, Flores do Mindelo and Cruzeiros do Norte, as well as street activities with Mandingas da Ribeira Bote, Sonhos sem Limites, the Pedra Rolada Acrobats, Jovens de Monte Sossego, Mandingas de Fonte Inês e Espia, Tucim Bedje and Os Aventureiros.
