MINDELO CARNAVAL - FEBRUARY 2008
There’s less than a month left to go before the beginning of the 2008 Carnaval. On Friday, February 1, the festivities will begin throughout the country with parades by kindergartens, elementary schools and a number of high schools. On the island of São Vicente, the temperature will begin to go up on Monday afternoon with a parade by Ludgero Lima High School. Monday night, traditionally occupied by the Samba Tropical Carnaval group, will this year be the exclusive realm of informal groups.
The official date of the 2008 Carnaval, February 5, ended up upsetting the preparations of most of São Vicente’s Mardi Gras groups, which usually begin working on their parades after the New Year’s celebrations - proof that, at least this year, the groups lack a certain degree of organization. “It’s impossible to have a quality Carnaval with so little time, especially considering the weak financial resources,” says the director of one of the island’s traditional groups.
The directorship of the group Maravilhas do Espaço indicated that it will not take to the streets during this year’s Carnaval for various reasons. Samba Tropical, another of the São Vicente Carnaval heavyweights, also announced some time ago that it would be taking another break this year.
Sonhos Sem Limites, Estrelas-do-Mar and Monte Sossego will also stand out as a result of their absence. Indeed, of Mindelo’s major Carnaval groups, only Flores do Mindelo promises to take to the streets to honor the second-place award it earned in last year’s celebrations. The only new group planning to parade is Cruzeiros do Norte, from the Cruz João Évora neighborhood of Mindelo.
